Provide Long-Term, Results-Focused Capital
Community-Driven Change
We believe that transformative – and sustained – change in schools is only possible if we also reimagine philanthropy. We’ve designed a new approach to philanthropy that uses three rigorous stages of escalating investment before we make a long-term investment. Examples of this in practice include:
Exploratory Investment: We determine, alongside a community, whether to partner. We know from the research, but also from our personal experience, that students, families, and teachers are too often absent from vision and strategy conversations. Before signing a partnership agreement, we talk with 75+ district and community leaders to mutually assess vision and values alignment, as well as existing conditions for change.
Vision and Strategic Plan Investment: We support a community coalition to co-design a vision to transform student outcomes and experiences. We flip the old top-down paradigm on its head by making a significant investment in ensuring students, families, and teachers have a seat at the table. We make a 12-18 month investment that catalyzes local movements around a shared “North Star” vision and strategy.
Implementation Investment: When local budgets and will are aligned to the community’s co-designed vision and plan, we make a multi-year implementation commitment to support both the district and families in realizing their plan.
